I am fortunate to have the oppourtunity to spend time with the pageant contestants during pageant week. I caught up with them as they had lunch with the LUWIP members. After an intense morning of rehersals.

After lunch the contestants went to game room to let there hair down and have some fun!!!

Greetings

It has been over a year since I written an article on this blog. For that, I am truly sorry. Over the past year, a lot has happened so certain things had to be put on the backburner.

From since my last real post, The Miss Liberia in the US Scholarship Pageant has crowned 3 queens all reigning from Georgia. That is spectacular!!! The Pageant system has made great strides to become even stonger than ever.

When I first started this blog I thought of it a way of showcasing this wonderful pageant organization and as a way to show when dedicated women get together what postive changes take place. I didnt exepect many people to be intrested. I truly beleved that the only people who would take intrested in this would be ones who had a direct connection to Liberia or this pageant system.

However during this years pageant I had a chance to talk to the members of the LUWIP Organization and pageant directors who informed me that they acutally missed the blog posts and wished that I would start writing again.

When I got back home and opened my inbox I was suprized to see so many commments that I has to respond to. I spent the whole morning going through each comment.

I want to say thank you for those people who supported and wrote to say keep on writing. That really means a lot to me.

Over the past two years I have moved to a new home and I am currently about to start a family. Nevertheless I will find the time to write at least once a month. There are new topics ,disscussions and interviews that I would like to address this year so this year will be exciting.

By the way be sure to come by soon as I post some pictures from the 2011 pageant!!!

Greetings,
I has been a while since I have made a post on the on the blog. I have been spending a lot of time preparing for the 2009 Season.

During my preparations I came across a totally awesome on-line talk radio show!!! a pageant online talk radio show.

Despite the fact that this blog focuses on Liberian and African Pagentry, a lot of the ideas and practices of our pageants do come from the American Pageants System. The information that I found on this online talk show is valueable to pageant contestants as well as directors.

Well another year is over and we have another queen. The Miss Liberia in the US Organization has Just completed its 8th year. Ever year the organization provides scholarships and oppourtunities to young Liberian women here in the US . Over the past 3 years it is estimated that the Organization has provided approxmately provided $10,000 in scholarships to Liberian women accross the country. During this pageant year friends were made, experience was gained, tears of happiness and joy were shed.

So what is next??? A new queen will have an oppourtunity to make a difference in her community, across the nation, and possibly around the globe!!! The decision is her's. She will make the crown and title what she wants for the year. It dose'nt make her. What she does today will impact how people see you as a queen but as an individual. So for our new queen I have some advice as you start your year as Miss Liberia in the US.

1) Enjoy the Moment!!!
Yes!!! You have just captured one of the most coveted and respected titles for African Pagentry here in the United States!! Be very proud of that.

2)Get to work on your platform
Get with your state and national directors and see how they can assist you in promoting your platform for the year. Most likely they already have a list of projects that they would you to undertake.

3)Meet your responsiblities
As Miss Liberia in the US, when you give anyone your word make sure you live up to them. When you start the Miss Liberia in the US pageant program you sign a contract saying that you would meet certain requirements during your reign. Failure to meet your responsibilities can result in putting yourself in an embrassing predicament and even up to stripping of your crown and title.

4)Be Punctual!!!
I know,I know we as Liberians have the notorious habit of being late. However as a queen you should strive to live above the standard. Your pageant director, sponsors and organizations have gone out of their way to plan events to promote you and your title. To totally be late or do a no show shows a lack of respect and is just inconsiderate and rude.

5)Invest in Fine stationery
Nothing more shows your appreciation more than a sponsor, mentor, organization or just and individual receiving and hand written thank you note on fine stationery. Thanking them for their support, contributions, or just inviting them to an event you are hosting. This personal touch goes a long way to developing great relationships.

6) It's more than just a crown
A lot of people feel that Miss Liberia in the US Pageant System is strictly for entertain purposes. Where a group of young women are randomly selected from all around the US to entertain our community by showcasing lovely attire and preforming talent. Being Miss Liberia in the US or just participating the pageant system is so much more. It is a chance or and oppourtunity to give back to your community to make a difference to be a mentor to youth to be a source of help to elderly. There is so much power in the crown but it depends on you. How do you want to be remembered? It you who makes the crown the crown does not make you

I hope this advice helps the the national and states queen to have a successful and productive reign.

Miss Liberia Maryland Korvi Kamara Attends the Liberian Independence Day Celebrations in Washington DC

The day after the Miss Liberia in the US Pageant Miss Liberia Maryland attends the Liberian Independence Day Celebrationss held at the Liberian Embassy. The Grounds were filled with Vendors , Entertainers and fellow Liberians young and and old as they celebrated Liberia's 161st birthday. The festivies began at 10 oclock that morning and did not end until 8pm that evening.

All of Liberia's comfort foods were there roasted meat and fish and my favorite Palava Sauce and Rice to the novelites we loved as children such as frozen Kool-Aid and Milk Candy!!!

Miss Kamara spent the entire time meeting and greeting fellow Liberians, taking pictures with men women and children. She even had the oppourtunity to meet a former Miss Republic of Liberia Queen.

At the end of the event Miss Kamara said "What a wonderful way to end the weekend. First I met an competed with some of the most dynamic Liberian women in the United States and eventhough I did not win it felt nice to come home to where my fellow Liberians from Maryland Washington DC Metropolitan Area treated me warmly and like a true Queen. I definately do feel like a winner!!"

As if she was destined to make history, Ms. Hananatu Tunis, a New York resident snatched the Miss Liberia USA 2008 Crown Friday night at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in the heart of Philadelphia.

The annual Miss Liberian pageant is hosted by the illustrious women of the Liberia United Women in Progress (LUWIP), and it coincides with the celebration of Liberia’s 161st Independence Day on July 26th.

Pageant winner Ms. Hananatu TunisEight women representing their respective states put up a fabulous show as they tried to win the prestigious Miss Liberia 2008 crown. The show began with the Queens stepping on stage in their elegant African attires.

Under the watchful eyes of judges led by former Liberian arch national goalie and community activist, D. Zeogar Wilson, eight beautiful women, including Miss Ophelia Chulu of California, Miss Maima Harriet Badio of Pennsylvania, Miss Geogetta Wade Jarba-Wayne of Michigan, Miss Cassandra Zoewi Bornstein-Baylor of Texas, Miss Korvi Wanga Kamara of Maryland, Miss Alida Wilson of New Jersey and Miss Belloh Paulette Julius of Georgia participated in various aspects of the pageant.

Part 3 Miss Liberia in the US contestants cruise the Spirit of Philadelphia

July 23 Penns Landing Philadelphia

The contestants woke up to an intense early morning rehearsal and headed out to lunch on the spirit of Philadelphia. The ladies had a wonderful time as they enjoyed scrumptous lunch and cruise along the Delaware River that separates Philadelphia PA from Camden NJ. During the cruise the contestants were entertained by the cruise staffas they preformed their movies and magic ensemble. Miss Georgia made a guest preformance in a Dreamgirls selection!!!

After the cruise the ladies quickly went back to the hotel and got change for a photo shoot in downtown Cemter City Philadelphia the rest of the evening was spent as free time and preparing for pageant night.

Part 2 Miss Liberia in the US contestants attends LUWIP first honoring session in Philadelphia PA

Wed July 23 Philadelphia PA

The contestants woke up to another wonderful breakfast and headed out to for an intense 2 hour rehearsal.

After rehearsal ladies got ready for their volunteer activity at the Royal Gardens Park in Philadelphia. This park once funded by the city government lost its funding when the area started to deteriorate. Nicole Chandler a locat residence refused to see the park and her neighborhood become an total eyesore and founded the Royal Gardens Association. With virtually no starting funds, she went to work researching applying for grants and recuriting volunteer and created a community senerity garden.

The ladies spent the morning doing gardening work pulling weeds clearing brush, and raking to create an expanison to the garden.

After the community service activity, the contestants went to lunch at Philadelphia famous Reading Market Terminal. The Reading Terminal was the original terminal where trains arrived in form all over the country back in the 1800's and early 19oo's Now its serves as a commerical district and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Philadelphia.

After the ladies had lunch and had a little bit of downtime, the ladies contestants prepared for the LUWIP's 1st Mayor Honorng Reception Dinner,located in the Mayor Reception Room at City Hall.
The ladies the evening greeting Councilmen and women city officals, pageant sponsors and prominent Liberian figures in Philadelphia. During the Ceremony contestant came up to podium and presented their platform.Next LUWIP members honored key members in the society which included...

Miss Liberia in the US 2008 contestants arrive in Philadelphia PA

On Sunday April 20 2008 state finalists from all across the United States arrived at the Downtown Marriott Residence Inn in Philadelphia PAfor the 8 Miss Liberia in the US Pageant.

After contestants unpacked they were given an orientation where each one of them were interviewed by the LUWIP board.

The rest of the evening was spent breaking the ice as prepared for their first offical excursion to New York City.

On Monday Morning the constantants started off with a hearty breakfast and attended there first rehearsal. After rehearsal, the contestants took in lunch at the Hard Rock cafe and headed out headed out to New York City. The contestant arrived Double Tree Suites located in the heart of Manhattan on Broadway. During their stay the contestants resided in the Penthouse suite located on the 3oth top floor of the hotel. After the ladies settled in, they went for dinner at Steakhouse and toured the 42nd Street and Broadway strip. During the tour they stopped to meet and greet fellow New Yorkers and tourists from all around the world.

On Tuesday had 4:00 early morning start to attend the taping of Regis and Kelly Live at the WABC studios on 80th and Columbus Streets. After the show , Regis Kelly and Gilman all stopped stop for a photo op with the contestants.

After the show the ladies checked out of the hotel and headed out to UN Bldg for their meeting with the UN Liberian Ambassador Barnes. During this meeting the ladies had and opportunity
to ask the Ambassador many relevant question of various issues concerning Liberia from education and healthcare to current relations with our neighboring countries.

I do beleive that the Trip to the UN will be an experience that these ladies will never soon forget.

Two weeks after being crown Miss Liberia Maryland Korvi Karmara makes her first official appearance at the 2008 Sierra Leone Image Awards held in Washington DC. Alida Wilson Wins 2008 Miss Liberia New Jersey Scholarship Pageant Newark, NJ, – June 14, 2008 – A crowd of hundreds of well-wishers filled the Multi-Purpose Room of the Paul Robeson Campus Center at Rutgers State University-Newark, on Saturday evening to witness the 2nd Annual Miss Liberia New Jersey Scholarship Pageant hosted by Women’s Vision for Progress [WVFP] under the direction of Kim Trinity and Debbie Ivy. The winner was 17 year-old Alida Wilson of Newark, NJ, 1st Runner-Up, Saymah Nah of Newark, and 2nd Runner-Up, Alexis Barclay of Atlantic City. Cloe Simpson of Union, NJ was the 4th contestant, Harriett Sumo of Newark, the 5th contestant, and Juah Payne of Newark, the 6th contestant. The contestants were judged based on their performances during the African Wear, Swimwear, Talent, Evening Wear, and Interview competitions. Miss Wilson is a senior heading to The University of Maryland where she will be studying Business & Marketing. She is a member of the student council and the debate team. During her reign she will promote her platform by helping and providing life’s basic necessities to orphaned and disabled children in New Jersey and Liberia. WVFP will sponsor a humanitarian trip to Liberia where she will intern with Non-Profit Youth Action International fulfilling her platform goals. Miss Harriette Badio captures the Miss Liberia Pennsylvania title

On Saturday April 26 2008 Miss Harriette Badio won the Miss Liberia Pennsylvania Title .

Maima Harriet Badio currently lives in Bristol Pennsylvania with her mother Ruby Badio. She is a 20 year old sophomore at The George Washington University, studying Economics and International Affairs, with a concentration in Development. She plans to get her masters in Economics and Business Management and eventually return to Liberia to open a consulting firm. Her hobbies include singing, reading, spending time with family and friends, and being outdoors. Harriet strongly believes in the importance of giving back to the community. She currently works at AnBryce, an organization that strives to promote the academic and personal growth of underprivileged DC children. She developed a passion for music at a young age and enjoys the thrill of being in the studio and recording songs. Her motto is, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going!"

The Miss Liberia Maryland Organization is pleased to announce the launching of the Miss Liberia Maryland Princess Mentor Program. Our goal is to motivate and mentor Liberian young girls and share experiences that will inspire them to dream of being Miss Liberia Maryland and ultimately Miss Liberia in the US .

The Miss Liberia Maryland Princess Mentor Program is designed to benefit young girls 3 to 12 years of age. The program allows these young girls to be involved with the Miss Liberia Maryland Princess Mentor Program before they reach competition age and to see the Miss Liberia in the US Organization from a whole new light.

The program also provides the young girls an opportunity to serve as role models for other Liberian peers throughout the State of Maryland.Each princess will be matched up with a Miss Maryland contestant. The Miss Contestant will be a "big sister" to the princess and stay in contact throughout the year. Each Princess will receive and sash, a title, and take part in the Miss Liberia Maryland Pageant, as well as receive special invitations to all Miss Liberia Maryland events.

As a Miss Liberia Maryland Princess you are welcome to participate in parades or make appearances with your title making it a fun and beneficial experience for each girl.

Bellah Julius wins the Miss Liberia Georgia title!!!!!

Before a capacity crowd on Sunday night, May 25, 2008, 23 years Bellah Julius was crowned Miss Liberia-Georgia 2008. Bellah won after scoring high marks in the appearances, activities, African attire, evening wear and intelligence categories. During her reign she plans to promote her platform by working with underprivileged youth in the state of Georgia and Liberia; also working along side various project organized by Liberian and International organizations.

The night was full of awe. Miss Archel Bernard was first runner up and Ciatta Kiawu the second runner-up. All of the young ladies were challenging and no one could easily determine the outcome. Other contenders for the crown was Miss Patricia Diggs, Miss Entrepreneur and Esther Pratt, Miss Congeniality. The director of the pageant, Mrs. Alma Dennis-Muah thanked the community, sponsors, the audience, the participants and volunteers for their tremendous support. Bellah will represent the state of Georgia at the Official Miss Liberia USA in July in Philadelphia, PA on July 25, 2008

Miss Liberia Mamawa Fofana ecourages the youth to vote in Liberian Community Association Washington DC Elections

On Sunday March 9th Miss Liberia in the US Mamawa Fofana attended the LCA Washington DC Metropolitian Area Chapter for the 2008 Elections. She spent the entire day meeting and greeting Liberians from all over the Washington DC Metropolitian Area. As they came to cast their voter for the two camps (the Kear/Smith Party and the Johnson/Harris Party). Voters came out in record numbers there were over 800 Liberians who registers and about 500 who came out on election day.

Ms Fofana thought it was wonderful to see Liberians from all over area participate in something that was positive and would beneifit Liberians not only here the DC Maryland and Virginia Metro Area but Liberians across the United States.

Miss Fofana assists with voters signing in for the event.

The day was filled with excitement and lots of activity after members voted they went to a lounge where they listened to music and ate Tasty Liberian fare provided by Mr Dorzon one the areas best Liberian Caterers. while they waited on the final tally they engaged themselves in healthly politcal discussions. In all, the election process was very succesful.

At the end of the Day it was the Johnson Harris /Team who was elected into office. We at Liberian Pageants congratulate them and wish them the best of luck for the next 2 years.

Spotlight Article: Miss Liberia Minnesota Aicha Cooper

During the 2007 Pageant Season I had the oppourtunity travel along with the contestants during pageant week. During that time, I had the oppourtunity to see how each one ticks. there likes and dislikes, their strengths and uniqueness. Each one left quite an impression on me. I would like to share my thoughts with you. Maybe there may be something that you can learn from each Queen.

Aicha Cooper

Miss Liberia Minnesota 2007-2008

It was the 2nd Day of Pageant week. All of the contestants had checked into New York and the following day we headed up to the Hamptons. All execept Aicha who was coming in late from MN and had transportation problems once she arrived in New York's JFK Airport. Her travel from her home state seemed to take all day. She did not meet up with rest of the group until the wee hours of the following morning.

Despite the hectic travel and flight delays. Aicha had a sense calmness about her. She never buckled under pressure and never missed a beat. She was up bright and early the following to begin her pageant boot camp training with the rest of the contestants.

Being a Miss Liberia in US State Queen is not always about being glamourous. You have to be able to adjust and adapt to any situtation that may come up; from missed flights, early morning reahearsals, and just stress of the competition itself and top it all off, you have to do it with the most ultimate grace and style.

When I started this blog almost 2 years ago I promised myself that would faithfully monitor this blog and discourage any bashing of any contestant be it from fellow contestants or readers.

Normally I do get great posts the that leave postive messages and words of ecouragement to pageant queen. However this week I received my first post from and anonymous reader that bashes a pageant queen. I decided I would share this with you and address this issue right away.

It reads "Miss Liberia Org, you needs to step up your game Miss Liberia 2007 looks so plain and I dare say unattractive........... YOU MUST HAVE MORE ATTRACTIVE LIBERIAN GIRLS"

Let me point out a few things to you .
The Miss Liberia in the US Pageant is not pageant system that classifies themselves a "beauty pageant"

If you look at their pageant criteria judges look at the following categories:

African Wear
Swimwear
Evening Wear
Talent and...
Interview (this category is weighted the heeaviest)

No where in the entire book do they judge on a contestants attractivness or physical beauty

I guess the organization finds others characteristics to be more important than just transparent and fleeting beauty. Personally I am quite happy that the organization holds other qualities in higher regard. Besides what's the use of having a Miss Liberia who is just a pretty face and is as dense as a brick and has no talent ?

However if you are looking around just to find some attractive Liberian Girls. Their are lot of websites and calendars that posts attractive Liberian girls all the time. Pick one up. However if you are looking for Liberian women who posses more substance and have more to offer than just a pretty face. Then the Miss Liberia in the US Pageant is where it's at!!!:)

Last of all. This blog is to promote the positive things the Miss Liberia in the US State and Nationals Queens as well at other "reputable Liberian and African Pageants and their Queens" This blog is a place of upliftment and postive recognition. It disturbs me that you say something so cruel that will affect a young lady who is positve, intelligent, vibrant, and who is making a difference her community. It would disturb me even more if you were a fellow Liberian. The mere fact that you would post something like this (anonymous or not) speaks a lot about your character and you have personal issues that you need to come to grips with.

To Miss Liberia 2007. There's a lot of people in this world who will say or post things that may be hurtful and spitful without even thinking on how or whom it will affect. However, I know you can handle it because you are Miss Liberia USA and Miss Liberia USA can handle anything.

Weeks After Rocking the World Bank, Mokoli Designs Raise the Roof at Zanzibar with the Hottest Global Fashion Trends

The waterfront was all class and culture last Saturday as sassy models from several countries ripped the runway in a special sneak preview of Mokoli's summer collection at Zanzibar. The audience was entertained in a contagious performance by hip-hop queen Madarocka, who stormed the stage with Fulani Twins and brought her crowd to its feet with her song, Africa Love. This performance came two weeks after Mokoli designs were displayed at the World Bank's Annual Global Showcase.

"For the Diaspora, With Love," sponsored by Zanzibar, Kololo Productions and the Miss Africa International Pageant, "was a cultural showcase," stated organizer Raymond Paris of Kololo Productions. J. Hanson Christian, founder of Zanzibar, couldn't agree more. "We continue to enjoy a longstanding relationship with the Miss Africa International pageant, a pillar of culture and social responsibility in the community," he chimes in. On Thursday Dec 13 2007, Miss Liberia Maryland Ambassador Tonia Kamara attended the 5th annual Sullivan Awards Dinner held at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington DC.

The event was held in honor of his excellency the President of Tananzia for his work and contributions to the foundation.

The foundations mission is to carry on the spirit and legacy of Reverend Leon H. Sullivan, the great African-American international humanitarian.The Leon H. Sullivan Foundation leverage's the commitments and resources of the African Diaspora and friends of Africa to promote positive change in the world. Our work is guided by the principles that Reverend Sullivan championed: self-help, social responsibility, economic empowerment, and human rights. To that end the Foundation advocates on relevant domestic and international issues; supports the work of the Sullivan organizations, and provides a platform for Africa’s political, economic, and, cultural leaders.

The room was filled with African as well as African American celebrities as well as a slew of African American political leaders . Those who spoke that evening included Andrew Young and Jesse Jackson the entertainment for the evening was non other than commedian and actor Chris Tucker as well as Boys to Men who had just flew in from Paris to attend the event.

The Leon H. Sullivan Summits bring together the world’s political and business leaders, delegates representing national and international civil and multinational organizations, and members of academic institutions in order to focus attention and resources on Africa’s economic and social development. Their mission was inspired by Rev. Leon H. Sullivan’s belief that the development of Africa is a matter of global partnerships. It was particularly important to Rev. Sullivan that Africa’s Diaspora and Friends of Africa are active participants in Africa’s development.

In a past interview with "Running Africa" she stated,"I decided to do pageants because I felt it would give me a platform to launch a campaign to aid Liberia, promote awareness of Liberia, as well as show the beauty of Liberia,"

Cassell, is the founder and leader the Team Liberia California campaign, which aims to promote awareness of Liberian issues, provide aid to Liberia, and foster relationships within the Liberian community.

The mission of Team Liberia California is to enlighten and inform about Liberia as well as strengthen the sense of collectiveness within the Liberian community and foster bonds with other communities.

Liberian Girls United, a subdivision of Cassell's organization, launched a website called LiberianGirl.net. The website was designed to serve Liberian teenagers and young adults who live around the world. Through LiberianGirl.net, she hopes to provide positive role models for young Liberian women and create a space for relevant issues and information that can be viewed by all.

All is well I am having a great time. All the girls are really nice. My roomate is Miss Korea, sweet girl. Today we had a photo shoot in our national costumes and bathing suit. Tomorow we have a lot planned. There is a press conference in our swimwear (very weird) but i think were gonna just pose for photo ops around in our swimwear (I am assuming,) After the press confrence, we have a welcome party cocktail party where we have to wear long formal gowns. I will keep you posted as the days go by and send more pictures.

The 2007 Miss International Beauty Pageant is currently taking place in Tokyo (Japan) from October 2nd to October 15th. 66 beauties from all over the world will try to win the coveted title currently held by Daniela Di Giacomo of Venezuela.

Miss International (officially titled The International Beauty Pageant) is the fourth largest beauty pageant in the world. It was created in Long Beach, California, USA in 1960 after the departure of the Miss Universe pageant to Miami Beach. Hosted in Long Beach until 1967, the pageant moved to Japan from 1968–1970, being hosted each year in the same city as the Japan Expo. For 1971 and 1972, it was held in Long Beach again, but since that time it has been held annually in Japan.
Also called a "Festival of Beauty" and even the "Olympics of Beauty", this pageant is not based on looks alone. Contestants are expected to serve as "Ambassadors of Peace and Beauty", showing tenderness, benevolence, friendship, beauty, intelligence, ability to take action, and, most importantly, a great international sensibility.

Mamawa briefly tell us about yourself?

I am a student at the University of Delaware and I am studying Mechanical Engineering. I enjoying dancing and it is one of my most passionate hobbies. My mother is one of the most influential people in my life, and she has instilled in me morals and strong ethical values.

Tell me about the competition? How did you relate to the other ladies?

The competition was very exciting. It was definately a once in a lifetime experience that I will hold close to my heart. I related to the other ladies in so many ways, we shared the same goal of working together to make this pageant one of LUWIP's most known and memorable pageants, and I believe we did so!! Also they were all very friendly and caring individuals, and we plan to keep in touch with each other through phone conversations and visits.

Briefly describe your pageant week experience?

The pageant week experience was new and intersting. We did a lot of traveling which was fun. We went from the Warwick Hotel, to the Hamptons, to the Sheraton Hotel in New York City to the Hampton Inn in Philadlphia!! We certainly enjoyed our Beauty Pageant Boot Camp and could say that we all successfully completed training to the highest degree. It was simply amazing!

What are some of the prizes you received along with the Miss Liberia in the US title?

I recieved a sash, crown, a scholarship cash prize, a laptop, and a Mary Kay gift basket.

What role has pageants played in your life?

The role pageants have played in my life is the fact that they have taught me to keep my head up high. When the going gets tough, keep moving forward. Some of the best things in life are worth fighting for, and you have to give it all you have so that you can prove to yourself that it is important and a significant matter in your life.

What has participating in the Miss Liberia in the US Pageant System done for you?

It has encouraged me to invite other people to get involved. Also it has stregnthened me as a Liberian women. It is something that I plan to be a part of in the future through volunteering efforts even after my reign.

What encouragement has your family given you to help you prepare for today?

My family has prayed for me as well as given me encouraging words of advice. They have kept in touch with me the whole process and have wished me well. The day of the pageant I was blessed and honor to have them there as well as close friends from my University, who very much are an integral part of my life as well.

What would you say is one of your greatest accomplishments up to date?

I would have to say that being crowned Miss Liberia in the U.S. is one of my greatest accomplishements up to date. And oh yeah being born!

What is your greatest passion?

My greatest passion is dancing. There is nothing better than enjoying what you do, and being able to entertain people in the process. Many people love to see me dance, and I am thankful that I am capable of sharing my talents with others.

Can you tell us about your educational background?

I attended P.S. 36 in the Bronx, NY, and then I went to middle school I.S. 174 in the Bronx, NY as well. I went to high school at Western Senior High School in Baltimore, MD, and graduated 4th in my class. And lastly I am a third year student at the University of Delaware studying Mechanical Engineering.

What has been the foundation of your sucesss?

The foundation of my sucess roots in my strong belief in God and having a wonderful mother by my side the whole way through. Also great siblings and beautiful friends.

What are your future plans?

My future plans right now are to continue to be a role model at home, at school, at my place of worship and mostly in the Liberian community. I plan on successfully completing my degree at Univeristy of Delaware and pursuing graduate school. I also want to start a non-profit organization that focuses on math and science programs, to increase the potential that exists in low income communities.

What are your plans as Miss Liberia in the US how do you plan to give back to community ?

My plans as Miss Liberia in the U.S. is to fufill my platform on educating our people on drug awareness and drug abuse and how it effects us as a whole entity. I plan to give back to the community through volunteering efforts and making my voice heard to help those in need.

What would you tell other young Liberian Women who are considering participating in their local state pageant ?

I would tell them to work hard, but to have fun. The pageant is a good way to meet new people and to learn about yourself as an individual. Definately do not get upset if things don't work out in your favor, simply because there are better things to come.

What message do you have for Liberians in the US?

The message I have for Liberians in the U.S. is thank you for believing in yourself as a people. We are beautiful both inside and out, and maintaing a sense of pride is more than an honor but a privelage. To be born of Liberian decent is an ongoing blessing for generations to come.

Since the sudden boom of Ethnic /African based pageants here in the United States. Many these pageants systems and the contestants as well as judges have complained of the lack of ethical practices shown during these events.

Many other pageants around the world have adopted some type of " Code of Ethics System by which their system abides by. The Code of Ethics systems help to protect Pageant Systems contestants judges and sponsors in from unjustified and fraudulent acts.

The EPIC International Association (Events, Pageants, and Individual Contestants) International Association) estsblished in 1986 took on the mission of eliminating unethical practices and promoting positive experiences with the industry. In doing so EPIC created the pageant industry’s first Code of Ethics and Rules of Censure.

Pageant Systems Directors, Contestants,Judges,Sponsors and Vendors join this Association with the promise to uphold their obligation to their contestants, sponsors and the general public to provide quality pageants with reasonable entry fees, under stated terms and conditions, to conduct business ethically and with integrity and to place contestant, sponsor and general public satisfaction foremost in their endeavors.

Once the pageant System or director has agreed to this Code of Ethics and signed its rules of censure, the Board of Directors designates a seal of Approved Director and Approved Pageant

Each Approved Director and Approved Pageant then obligated to the following:

Members advertising and promotional materials will accurately, honestly and clearly represent their pageant, services, gifts, and prizes as actually provided.

Members will accept responsibility for representations made on behalf of their pageant by employees or agents.

Members shall pay for all goods and services in a timely manner.

Members will make available the pageants rules, regulations, accurate and clearly understandable entry fees, terms and conditions to contestants, sponsors, and the general public.

Members will respond to contestant inquiries and complaints expeditiously and honestly, and will work in good faith to resolve contestant concerns to the contestant's satisfaction.

Members will always hold a judges orientation prior to the pageant and shall admonish judges to refrain from contact with contestants other than at scheduled pageant events.

Members will treat competitors with respect, refraining from making any disparaging comments, accusations, unfavorable implications or providing misleading information about a competitor's products and services.

Constestants as well can become Members of EPIC International
Once Approved contestants are then obligated to the following:

Members resumes, fact sheets and biographical information will accurately, honestly and clearly represent their true and actual background.

Members shall always act responsible and with pride when competing in an event or when representing a event as a title holder.

Members will follow all of the event rules, regulations and obey the terms and conditions set forth by the event in which they are competing.

Members will respond to their event directors inquiries and complaints expeditiously and honestly, and will work in good faith to resolve the event director's concerns to the director's satisfaction.

Members shall refrain from conversations and contact with judges other than at scheduled activities and shall ask their friends and relatives to refrain in the same manner.

Members will not participate in any activities that will harm another competitors chances or result in demoralizing a competitor.

MARYLAND CAPTURES THE MISS LIBERIA IN THE US TITLE!!!

Miss Mamawa L. Fofana of Baltimore, Maryland captured the Miss Liberia in the US Title on Friday,July 27 2007 Thirteen young Liberian women from all across the US graced the stage of the Philadelphia Convention center to compete the coveted Miss Liberia in the US Crown!!!

At 7pm the hall of the convention center began to fill with VIP's, members of the press, family, freinds, and well wishers.
By 8pm, the pageant doors closed and the preliminary interviews began. After the interviews the doors were opened and the pageant was underway. The hall filled with excitement as 13 beautiful ladies from across the United States graced the stage, competing for prestigious Miss Liberia in the US title . It was definately a celebration of true Liberian beauty, style and intelligence.

The Queens included Victoria Wehjla of Rhode Island , Elenora Gbeh Peter of Virginia , Rosetta D. Reeves of Georgia, Mawata Fofana of Maryland and Rona Princess Remmie of Missouri . Others are Mawata Dunbar-Youboty of Pennsylvania , Patrice N. Njoh of Michigan , Aicha Cooper of Minnesota , Gwendolyn Mensah of North Carolina , Monique Verdelle Cooper of Oklahoma , Vera Lucille Kargbo of Delaware , Marveltha Mensah of New Jersey and Liamoh P. Thomas of California

The featured entertainer was none other than the Sierra Leone sensation Emerson!!! He totally had entire crowd on its feet as he preformed his lastest hit Tutu Party!!!

The queens were beautiful and incredibly fascinating and they displayed intelligence, grace, wit, and ambition, traits which attracted hundreds in the audience Friday night. The queens displayed their individual talents to the delight of the crowd. The talent competition this year was showcased various preformances such as, a pianst, saxaphonist, a broadway dancer, tradional Liberian cultral dancing, jazz contemporary dancing, engaging monolouges, and dynamic singers.

The contestants lit up the stage in some of the most beautiful and original their African attire and evening wear. They were also interviewed, in which the winner performed outstandingly. At the end of the evening, It was Miss Maryland Mamawa L Fofana won the title and received a scholarship check of $2,500, a dell laptop computer and boat load of other prizes.Special Awards Miss North Carolina swept the Miss Photogenic, Class and Style as well as the 2007 LUWIP Commericial Award, Miss Pennsylania received the Miss Congentiality award and the 2007 Edith Bargor Award went to Rona Princess Remmie of Missouri.

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!!! THE MISS LIBERIA IN THE US PAGEANT IS NOW IN SESSION

Thirteen contestants came from all around the US on Friday July 19th and met the Warick Hotel in Downtown Manhattan for the begining of the Miss Liberia in the US Pageant activties.

Friday
When the contestants arrived, they were greeted by sponsor MacDella Cooper who hosted the constestants for the entire week during their stay in New York. Ms. Cooper presented the contestants with welcome bags which included a book by actress Victoria _____ from the Young and the Restless and cosmetics from Estee Lauder.
During Ms. Cooper talk to contestants she encouraged them to enjoy themselves during their stay.

After their meet and greet session, contestant had a heart to heart session where they got to know more of each other and had a slumber party. Where the contestant spend the rest of the evening laughing and joking a fell off to sleep in the wee hours of the Morning

Saturday
After breakfast the ladies packed up to spend the rest of the weekend in the Hamptons. The ladies stayed in the most exquiste 10 bedroom contemporary summer home with and miraculous backyard waterfall swimming pool. They were completely spoiled during their stay. Miss Kathy provided all the contestants with menu of healthy fresh cusine. Omelette made to order,bagels lox lots an lots of fruits, pasta salads tossed in wonderful tasting vinagrette,steak cooked to order,barbqcue chicken. The ladies automatically fell in love with Miss Kathy and Miss Kathy made 13 new freinds.
at night the ladies visited alocal nightclub in the Hamptons the ladies danced the night away to wee hours of the morning.

Sunday
The following the morning the Ladies got ready for rehearsal boot camp they ladies spent most of the morning and into the afternoon practicing their group preformance afternoon lunch and some much needed downtime. They set out tour the Hamptons shopping district and then it was back off to the city!!!
2hrs later we arrived at the Sheration NY on 42st in Times Square. After the contestants checked in,they immediately went for a night tour Times Square as they toured Times square they were greeted and took photo ops native New Yorkers throughtout the entire evening.

Monday
The Constantants were invited to stay in a New Penthouse Apartment on the corner of 72nd and Central Park West. This area is the home for many famous celebrites such as Howard Stern, Chris Rock. The Penthouse was located right accross the buliding from the John Lennon building. Upon arrival to the Penthouse the contestants their platform recordings and prepared to attend the Regis and Kathy show and their visit to the UN.

Tuesday
The Ladies woke up at 5am in the Morning to attend the taping of the Regis and Kathy show. Much to all of our suprized we saw Regis Philban walking to work accompanied by his bodyguard again to everyones amazement Regis walk right up to the contestant and greeted each and every one of them the ladies shook hands and gave warm hugs and stayed to do a photo op. He then went off to tape the show which was featuring no other that Academy and Golden Globe award winner Jennifer Hudson After the taping of the show, Regis once again met with the Ladies in the Lobby of the hotel and this time introduced us to Gilman. Regis then instructed his staff to do special taping of Promoting the Miss Liberia in the US Pageant. Which will air on Friday July 27th on ABC at 9am Eastern.
After the taping the ladies returned to the penthouse where they preprared for there visit to the UN Mission.

The Ladies arrived at the UN Liberian Mission Office where they were greeted by the Liberian UN Amabassador and his wife. The UN Ambassador congratulated the ladies and talked to them about the current situation in Liberia and how each and every one can do their part to part to help. He then challenged the ladies to help in the development in Liberia's youth by strongly promoting education. The ladies also had a time to ask the UN Ambassador many questions about Liberia's Welfare from the TRC to feeding Liberia's children. The experience was very touching for me and it will be something that I will never forget.

Wednesday

The ladies set out for the city of brotherly love Philadelphia PA where they were recevied by the ladies of LUWIP "The Liberian United Women in Progress". Upon their arrival they attended a welcome at The famous Phillips seafood. Members of the press were attended the event. The ladies sat down to a scrumptious seafood cocktail reception and many photo ops were taken

Thursday

The Ladies were invited on the Sprit of Philadelphia for a lunch cruise. The contestants had a blast as they were entertained by the ship's crew dancers and singers. Later on they took to the dance floor and danced until ship redocked at Penns Landing.

Friday

I am currently updating this report at 6:05 am. At this time the contestants are currently waking up to have breakfast and to attend their final rehearsal

PAGEANT HIGHLIGHTS
The house was" packed", well attended. Miss Rosetta D.Reeves came out the winner after a night of no telling . It was a tough competition, no one could really tell through out the night. Even to the last minute.
Some of our judges, a chemist, a model management Owner (bescoutednow.com), The owner of Miss Teen Africa USA, and the cof-ounder of Soweto Street Beat were some of our prestigous judges in the house. The judges definately had the hardest job of the evening, because all of the young ladies were all great!!!

Miss Sakon Wilson took 1st place, and Miss Nykita Garnett 2nd place. Other awards given to the other contestants was was Miss photogenic, Miss personality, and Miss cogneniality.

Miss Ghana USA assisted with Western Union in giving the scholarship prize.

Miss Celi Dean crowns her sucessor Miss Black USA Tennesee at the Black USA Pageant held in The Gambia West Africa.

I was in the in audience when Miss Dean won the Miss Black USA title in 2005. I was was then writing an article for then My Ezine Black Gem World. I had no idea that this young lady from Minnesota had Liberian roots until the talent competition where she gave a captivating monolouge about her heritage and her roots. The message that she was giving that evening was just fitting " not to make judgement of someone by their outward apperance."

Two years later she and 36 other delegates traveled to The Gambia West Africa to compete for the Miss Black USA Title. This is the first time the Miss Black USA has ever competed on the African Continent.

What is so unique about this event is that 2 of our past Miss Liberia in the US state queens went to the Gambia to compete in this competition. Miss Telena Cassell Former Miss Liberia California and Miss Wokie Daboh Former Miss Liberia Minnesota.

We are so proud of you!!!

The pageant and its focus on continuing education expose the young ladies to positive attitudes, values, beliefs, and global perspectives that will help expand their critical thinking skills as well as their ability to become more responsible adults. It seems that all across the country, young Africian and other ethnic women take the stage, smiling for judges, hoping to be the next beauty pageant winner. Many parents and daughters spend a lot of time effort and money on pageants hoping that their child will become the next supermodel or a famous movie star. The truth is that few are discovered that way.

Before entering into a beauty pageant, parents and contestants should consider the following questions:
How long has the company been operating pageants? Who are the directors? Usually pageants are operated by for-profit organizations that solicit participants by mail or print advertising, or by broadcast media, to compete for recognition and prizes from the promoter.
What is the total cost of pageant participation for both the entrant and the chaperone? Oftentimes, family or business sponsors are asked to pay a sponsorship fee, which can vary, to the pageant promoter to cover hotel rental fees, awards, administrative costs, salary for company personnel and company profits.
Can the location (place of business) of the pageant company be verified? Where and when will the actual pageant be held? What accommodations are provided for contestants? Will there be adequate supervision?
Who are the judges and what are their qualifications? Do they have any affiliation with the company?
Are refunds possible if a contestant decides to withdraw from the pageant?
How are the winners chosen? What criteria are used for selection?
What are the obligations of the winning contestant?
What do former contestants and winners have to say about the pageant? Ask the company for references.
Finally, what benefit will be derived from participating or winning?
If you're approached by a pageant company, do your reasearch first,Be sure to read any contract carefully and thoroughly in advance of entering a pageant to understand rights and responsibilities of the winner.

On Sunday May 27th The Ballroom of the Marriott Courtyard Washingtonian Center was filled to capacity with family, friends, and well wishers as the lights dimmed and 2007 Miss Liberia Maryland Pageant was underway.

The pageant weekend offically on Saturday afternoon. The contestants and past Maryland queens arrived at beautiful Marriott Courtyard Hotel overlooking the the water and a 2 mile boardwalk. After they checked into the hotel, the queens and finalists sat down to a brief orientation with the lobby and got settled into their rooms. Next it was on to have a fun filled afternoon on the boardwalk and do an informal photoshoot.

Newark, NJ, May 12, 2007 - Women’s Vision for Progress presented its 1st Annual Miss Liberia New Jersey Scholarship Pageant on the beautiful evening of May 12, at The Paul Robeson Center on the campus of Rutgers University. The event was certainly a place of elegance, beauty and culture. Pageantry was seen at its best.

19year-old Marketing and Business Management student, Marlvelthe Mensah was the night’s winner gleaming in her crowning moment as Miss Liberia New Jersey. She wowed the audience in stunning outfits in a pink African gown, contour Swimsuit and a talent performance that moved the audience to its feet.

The hall was filled with well wishers, family, friends and VIP royalty, which included: The reigning Miss Liberia in the US Miss Ro Pauline K Doe, Mrs. Edith Wilson, President of Liberian United Women in Progress, Celebrity Host and Executive Producer of the cable TV show "Imagine That" Ms Robin Richie and Mr. Edinam Oton of The African Magazine. The hall was set in an elegant dinner reception style. As guest arrived, they helped them themselves to a dinner buffet and mingled while waiting for the show to begin. The Master of the ceremonies was none other than Rev. Charles Levi Martin who kept the audience entertained and engaged as the contestants came out one by one during the African Wear, Swimwear, Talent, and Evening Wear competition.

The night’s entertainment was phenomenal!!!

The African dance troupe Fusion give an opening performance that mesmerized the audience as they delivered an excellent cultural dance performance. Other performances included Liberia’s own “Lucky Shango” and Solo R&B Artist Jodi.

At these events, I often come in contact with young Liberian girls who are inspired to become positive role models to their peers. One such girl is 7year old Miss Martin who competed in the Miss American Coed Pageants and won in her division.

Miss Nundiah Edwards, a double major senior from Berkely College took the title of 1st Runner-up.

Miss Josephine Manu, a Nursing major received the title of 2nd Runner-up.

Liberian Pageants wishes Miss Mensah the best of luck at the 2007 Nationals in Philadelphia.

Women’s Vision for Progress is a not for-profit, community-based organization headquartered in Newark, New Jersey. Their mission is to provide educational, charitable, and cultural programs of benefit to New Jersey youth in grades (K-12). They raise funds to provide educational scholarships, humanitarian services and cultural event sponsorship from businesses, public agencies, foundations, philantropists and individuals to meet their goals. WVFP is founded by Mrs. Kim Bowman-Trinity.

THE MISS LIBERIA PENNSYLVANIA PAGEANT : A SMASHING SUCCESS!!!

The Ballroom at the Holiday Inn Philadelphia Airport was filled to capacity last Saturday night. There was standing room only as guests filled the room to attend 2007 Miss Liberia Pennsylvania State Preliminary Pageant.

The 2007 Miss Liberia Pensylvania Pageant was definately a night filled with elegance excitement and suprizes.

The room was filled with VIP's and Special Guests. Among these people was the Miss Liberia of the Republic of Liberia Miss Patrice Juah who was accompanied by Miss Macedella Cooper, founder of the Macedella Cooper Foundation and the Official Platinum Sponsor of the 2007 Miss Liberia in the US National Pageant.

The night started out with 6 contestants meeting with judges for the preliminary interview. This 3 minute session with each contestant gave the judges an oppourtunity to get to know each contestant.

After preliminaries were done, the pageant was offlically underway. The ladies graced the stage with some of most spectualar African attire I have ever seen. The crowd cheered with excitement as the girls came up to the stage and introduced themselves to the audience.

Next, the Ladies took to the stage in their swimwear. The ladies sparkled as they struted on stage to the music in their signature white swim attire.

The talent competiton was definately the highlight for the evening for me. The preformances were fresh, well delivered and quite original.

Next the contestants went on to enteratain the audience by doing a group skit which involved the outgoing Miss Liberia PA Ro Pauline K Doe quizzing the PA contestants and the audience on Liberian Trivia.

It was on to the Evening Wear competion and the final interview question which was given by Miss Macedella Cooper.

After the judges submmttied their scores and the tabulation was complete, it was none other than Miss Mawata Dunbar who captured the Pennsylvania crown.

Miss Dunbar is a student at Temple University majoring in Nursing and a minoring in public health.

Happy Easter African Queen,

I want to thank you for your hard work and dedication to the Liberian Pageantry. I enjoy reading the articles on the Liberian queens and what they are up to. These are strong African females who are about empowering themselves and there communities.

My year as Miss Liberian Minnesota has been enriched with reaching out to the youth in my community through the Liberian Youth Network (LYN), a non-profit organization formed by myself and six other dynamic young Liberian females. Our focus is youth development in the Liberian community, and we've been able to do that through our LOT (Leaders of Tomorrow) mentoring problem.We have been able to conduct one-on-one as well as group mentoring sessions with the youths in our community. Attached are pictures of some of our mentoring program participants.

In addition to our youth development initiative, LYN help bring awareness and fight against the massive deportation of Liberians on TPS. As most of us are aware, Liberian TPS would be terminated in October of this year.Every Liberian would be effected by this regardless of his or her immigration status. We, LYN, would be hosting a fundraising event called Shoot For A Cause on May 19th 2007. Shoot for cause will be a three-on-three basketball tournament and speak-out. During the half-time of each game, speakers would come out to speak on the TPS issue and various steps we can take from here. We would so have some youths in our program speak out about how they would be affected by the termination of TPS. The money raised from Shoot for a cause would go towards helping to pay lawyers and lobbyist in the fight to change TPS recipiants status to permenant residency status.Well, that's all for now.

Miss America, Lauren Nelson, assisted police in targeting and capturing potential sexual predators via the internet. She posed as a 14-year-old girl chatting to complete strangers online .

Four men who showed up at a home expecting to meet with the minor were arrested. Seven more men, who chatted and submitted nude photos but did not meet with the fictional minor surrendered to the police.

All men are currently facing charges .

Miss Nelson's platform issue is Internet safety for children.

The Miss America Queen was glad to participate in the sting and draw attention to the dangers of the Internet.

In our homeland Liberia, many women as well as children have been subjected to acts of rape, violence, and all types of sexual discrimation. What can we learn from this Miss America Beauty Queen? What can we do to help erradicate this type of sexual violence back home?

THE OFFICIAL MISS LIBERIA IN THE US PAGEANT 2007® PHILADELPHIA PA – MARCH 21 2007 - The Liberian United Women in Progress, owners and the producers of the Official Miss Liberia in the US Pageant announced today that the Miss Liberia in the US Pageant scheduled for July 27 2007 in Philadelphia PA will kick off their pageant celebrations in New York City. The Miss Liberia in the US Contestants will arrive in New York and will commence on a two week tour along the East Coast that will begin in downtown Manhattan NY. The contestants will then travel futher up the East Coast and TheHamptons,Long Island NY and Connecticut and where they will visit the towns of Fairfield, Greenwich, and Norwalk.

During their 2 week stay. the contestants will be immersed in various cultral activites such as visiting Museums Universities a well as meeting with the Liberian UN Mission.

The contestants will have a little down time to relax as during their visit to the Hamptons. The Hamptons is one of the oldest and most popular resort locations in the United States. As far back as 1897, the Hamptons was recognized by The New York Times as being one the most fashionable resort locations in the US and has stellar reputation which promises to be long lasting. Society’s columnists and cameramen could be found following the ranks of the resort’s upper crust, on the look out for fashionable people sporting the latest look in leisure-time finery. Today the Hamptons is known for its arts, culture,fashion,high end shopping, fine real estate, and the flock of celebriites that can be found at any time vactioning in this elite destination spot.

The tour ends when the contestants arrive in Philadelphia PA the host city for the 8th Miss Liberia in the US Pageant. The reigning Miss Liberia in the US Ms Ro Pauline K. Doe will then crown her successor at the conclusion of the 4-hour competition

The Hamptons: Spotlight Destination for the 2007 Miss Liberia in the US Contestants

This year the Miss Liberia US contestants will be visiting one the top vacation resorts of America's most famous and social elite "The Hamptons Long Island New York"
Having a background in the travel industury, I decided to do little reasearch on the history, culture, people and tourist info and share it with our readers.
Just 160 kilometres north-east of Manhattan, along the far end of Long Island's South Fork, the Hamptons are a collection of small villages on property purchased by the English from the Shinnecock Indians in the 17th century.
Tourism began here after the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) was completed in the late 1800s and weary Manhattanites began flocking to the east end for the white sandy Atlantic beaches, unspoilt beauty and prime real estate.
While the breathtaking beauty remains, the Hamptons grown to accommodate New York's fashion, media and entertainment elite. It is a place where a $US30 million ($38.7 million) home can be considered a bargain; where top-flight restaurants burst at the seams; 20-something professionals blow their annual budgets for summer share houses; and P. Diddy sightings are a dime a dozen
South Hampton vs East Hampton
Southampton is the grande dame of the settlements. Founded in 1640, the town screams (or is that whispers) old money, which is to say, modestly ostentatious. Most homes are clad in the standard grey clapboard and front streets with cutesy names such as Meadow Lane. But these are mammoth mansions, protected by four-metre hedges and surrounded by acres of lawn with to-die-for beach access.
East Hampton, on the other hand, is what most people have in mind when they say that the Hamptons have become the sixth borough of New York City. The village has exploded in the past decade to become a resort version of Madison Avenue, packed full of luxury goods stores such as Gucci, Polo and Tiffany & Co. The vibe is a hybrid of pleasantville Americana and 21st-century materialism.
East Hampton is also the culinary heart of the Hamptons. Media bigwigs and high-flyer financial types, and those trying to marry either, cram into restaurants JL East and Nick and Toni's. Not surprisingly. Manhattan-style waitlists often apply at both restaurants - but the wait is worth it.
Polo: The Sport of Kings in the Hamptons
The game of polo also known as The sport of kings has roots reaching back to 600 BC (Before Cocktails were served in the tent) when the Turkomans beat the Persians in a nationalistic show of pride. One of the earliest celebrity polo players was Alexander the Great who used the metaphor of the game to describe his thirst for conquest, “I am the stick, the ball is the world.” The name polo actually derives from the ball, thought to come from “pholo” meaning ball or ballgame in Tibet or “pulu” the Tibetan willow from which it was meaning ball or ballgame in Tibet or “pulu” the Tibetan willow from which it was made.
There are six periods in the match, each lasting 7 minutes, with a half time break where spectators come on to the field. The basic objective of the game is to get control of the ball to either pass to a teammate or drive the ball down the field to attempt to score a goal.

A scholarship is an attractive word used when "free money" is given by an organization to an indivdual that does not need to be paid back. Scholarships can offered from different sources such as federal and state governments, private sources, non profit organizations among other entities. Scholarship awards range from a few to thousands and thousands of dollars.

People can be come eligible for scholarships in many ways.
These include:
Academic performance
Athletic achievement
Financial need
Religious affiliation
Minority status
Heritage
Community affiliations
last but not least
A unique set of criteria that's important to the organization providing funds

Pageants provide the atmosphere where women have to meet a certain unique criteria to win an assortment of gifts prizes and "free money" scholarships

Since 2000, the Miss Liberia in the US Pageant has provided gifts, prizes and "free money" scholarships to many Liberian women across the US.

For almost a generation, our country Liberia has gone throughout many hardships: military coups civil wars and years and years of corruption. Our nation was left in total shambles. Many Liberians fled to other countries all over the world. However, it is no secret that majority of Liberians took refuge in the United States. During the last generation, many Liberians took root here and found jobs, bought homes, raised familes, and had to quickly adapt to the ways of the American culture. Young Liberian females who were raised or born in the United States slowly began to lose the opportunity to learn about their Liberian heritage, culture, and values.

In 2000, a group of strong and promising Liberian women joined together to form LUWIP. Liberian United Women in Progress This non-profit and non-political organization's main objective is to promote and support young Liberian women by empowering them to achieve their personal and professional goals, while providing a forum for them to express their opinions, talents, and intelligence.

The Miss Liberia in the US Pageant provides an oppourtunity for females of Liberian decent to immerse themselves in the Liberian culture and to make a difference in the Liberian communities here in the United States as well as back home.

Contestants Corner: How to win with class and lose with dignity

I have been involved in pageantry for approxmiately 5 years. Pageant coaches including my self train their contestants on just about every aspect of the competition. They are are coached on walk, talk, stance, ettiquette, current events, hair, makeup, attire, smiling, platform developing, among a whole slew other topics. However, I never really hear about pageant coaches focusing one of the most important topics that there is in a pageant competition, learning how to win with grace and to lose with dignity.

The key to being a winner in anything you do is indeed to master how to win with grace and to lose with dignity.

A man once said to me "The secret to being a winner lies in your pattern of thought - your attitude. Your attitude will determine whether you are successful or not. Be careful what you are saying to yourself because you will believe what you say. Think right and you will do right. It is easier to think negatively than positively because it takes a greater effort and a stronger more secure person to be positive about things. Avoid looking for excuses, instead look for solutions."

True inner character will reveal itself by how you react after you lose. That is why you have to learn how to lose with dignity before you can learn how to win with class. Learning how to lose with dignity is far more difficult.

It is easier to be a winner when you have won and it takes more self-confidence and courage to lose with dignity. Lessons learned in a losing effort are more likely to be reinforced than those learned in a winning effort. In pageantry, young women have to realize the essence of success lies in the full out effort brought forth in competition. This effort centers on controlling what we have control over and not worrying about that which we have little or no control over.

We have control over developing, improving and perfecting physical, technical, tactical and artistic components of our performance. We have little or no control over officiating, or judging decisions, etc. For example, a pageant contestant should never lose a competition because of poor preparation. Getting your platform, outfits, talent and bodies into superior shape is what you have the most control over. Failing to prepare any of the above components is preparing for failure.

It is important to focus on putting forth a full 100 percent effort in controlling that which we have the most control over. Pageants are won before hand in the training sessions. When you step out to compete, you must know that you have prepared more than your opponent has. This being the case you will develop an attitude, in which you will refuse to lose in any conditions that you have control over. This is what I call confidence; although, be careful not to be over-confident as this could lead to detrimental results. Being confident is knowing you can lose, but thinking you will win. Being over confident is knowing and thinking you will win. Think of every competitive opportunity as a championship event, and where your opponent will challenge you to the best of your abilities.

More is not always better than less, because working harder is not better than working smarter. Working smarter means being productive by doing the right things, the right amount, and at the right time in order to improve physically, technically, tactically, and artistically.

Never worry about the outcome, focus on your performance, the lessons learned, and you will come out a winner. Remember that there lies a possibility that you can lose and still perform well.

The natural man always wants to come in first; the true disciple of Jesus learns how to come in last. Look how Jesus lost. He lost the confidence of John the Baptist (Matthew 11:3); He lost many disciples (John 6:66); He lost his dignity, respect, and clothing (Matthew27:29,35); and most important, He lost his life.

Kim, tell us a little bit about your background?

I am a graduate of Rutgers University where I received a BA in Journalism and Media Studies. In my teens and early twenties, I worked as a fashion model doing print and runway modeling. In 2001, I moved to New York to further my modeling career and while there I transitioned into television.

Kim, what year were you Miss Liberia NJ? How did you feel when you first realized that you wereMiss Liberia NJ.

I competed as Miss Liberia NJ in the 2002-2003 pageant year. In 2002, New Jersey did not host a pageant and I was selected by a women's nonprofit organization to represent the state. I was very honored to have been chosen on such a short notice.

Tell us about your pageant experience?

My experience in pageantry has been wonderful. At the Miss Liberia in the US Pageant, I was impressed to see young Liberian women coming together in a positive environment to promote the beauty and intelligence of the Liberian woman. I am honored to have been a part of something that is so well received in our community.

How was the relationship between you and your fellow contestants?

The relationship between myself and the fellow contestants was supportive. I made lasting friendships after the pageant. One of my closest friends is Miss Pennsylvania 2002-2003, Johnetta Gblah.

How did you use your state crown to reach out to the Liberian Community?

New Jersey did not have a pageant director nor apageant system in place during my reign. My duties with the crown was very limited. After the competition, I integrated into the Liberian Community and became familiar with my surroundings.

Why did you decide to take on the role of Pageant Director for New Jersey?

New Jersey has not had a pageant director and I am excited about taking the pageant into a new direction. I see pageantry as a means to provide educational scholarships to participants and I will do the same for Liberian women in New Jersey. When we speak about pageantry people tend to focus on the beauty and glamour of the competition but The Miss Liberia NewJersey Scholarship Pageant is an excellent foundation for contestants to receive scholarships to further their education considering many are unable to attend college or a trade school due to financial constraints.

What did the pageant experience do for you?

Pageantry has given me the confidence to express my views about women and world issues. It has also created an avenue by which I can reach out to Liberians and people of all nationalities in my Community.

Describe life after pageantry? What are you doing for a living now? What organizations are you a part of?

By profession, I am an Associate Television Producer for CBS News New York. I produce television shows for CBS and documentaries for various cable networks such as The Biography Channel, Discover Channel,History Channel among others. I am a member of the The National Association ofBlack Journalists, as well as the President of Women's Vision for Progress. Women's Vision for Progress is a non profit community-based organization that mobilizes financial and material resources to support educational and charitable program activities of benefit to at-riskyouth in New Jersey and Liberia.

What would you tell a young Liberian female thinking about participating in the Miss Liberia inthe US Competition?

I would say the competition provides an opportunity to interact with your peers, improve your selfconfidence, and attain personal growth. You can also win money, further your education, and gained state andnational exposure. The lasting experience is what you make of it.

Miss Liberia Ro-Pauline K Doe interviews with VOICE OF AMERICA

On Friday Feb 16 2007, Miss Liberia in the US Miss Ro Pauline K Doe arrived at the Voice of America Headquaters to meet with the entire crew of the Africa News Divison. Upon her arrival the queen was greeted and warmly rececived by the entire Africa News staff. She was then given a tour of the news center and given a brief history of VOA and its main headquarters. The Queen went on to meet with Daybreak Africa Host, James Butty and Nightline Africa Mr Ted Roberts.

Day break Africa is a 30 minute lively breakfast show that airs 4 times each morning 0300, 0400, 0500 and 0600 UTC.

Miss Liberia in the US Ro Pauline K Doe attends United Nations Confrence

On Thursday February 16, Miss Liberia in the US Ro Pauline K. Doe arrived in New York City to attend a UN Conference on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination and Violence against the Girl Child. The United Nations Organization established in 1945, serves to maintain international peace and security; to develop friendly relations among nations; to cooperate in solving international economic, social, cultural and humanitarian problems and in promoting respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms; and to be a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations in attaining these ends. On Thursday a group of international panelist met in the halls of the UN discussed the topic "Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination and Violence against the Girl Child.

The UN Sponsor for the Confrence was the Department of Economic and Affairs. Other Sponsor included the Division for the Advancement of Women and the NGO Committee on the Commission on the Status of Women Activities. Presentations were conducted by NGO and DAW panelists and followed by a general discussion.

The conference served as part of a ongoing mentoring program for the Liberian Queen to immerse herself and to become familar with various world issues.

As Miss Liberia Maryland, what is your platform?
As Miss Liberia Maryland, I like to focus on financial literacy. I have a background in accounting and understand the importance of proper financial management. I believe this is something all young Liberians should be aware of in order to help them excel in life.

Chelsey, tell me about your pageant experience. What was the thing you enjoyed the most about your trip to Philadelphia?
The pageant experience was one like no other. I really enjoyed getting out there and interacting with the people. We did some promotions for the pageant and meet and greets with people around the city. It was really nice.

How did your relate to your fellow contestants.
The other girls and I had a great deal of respect for one another. We all were cordial and supportive and still keep in touch.

What was your biggest challenge preparing for the National Competition?
My biggest challenge preparing for the National Competition was deciding and preparing my talent.

As a state queen you are seen as a role model to the Liberian youth in Maryland. Tell me what is the biggest problem you see facing the Liberian youth in Maryland today?

One of the biggest problems I see facing Liberian youth in Maryland is media influence. I believe there are so many youth that strive to emulate some of the media figureheads that they sometimes lose sight of reality.
Who do you look to as a role model and why?
I look at all the women in my family as role models. I have so many beautiful and intelligent women who are great mothers, friends, sisters, cousins, and overall good people who have made something of their lives achieving high educational goals and standards.

What would you like to tell young ladies who are considering to participate in the next Miss Liberia Maryland State Pageant?
Stay strong, know who you are and be proud and confident in who you are. People will see the good example you are leading and will want to follow in your footsteps.

Where do you see yourself in the next ten years???
In the next ten years I see myself as a successful business woman, running my own tax firm and non-profit scholarship organization. I also see myself with a family enjoying life to the fullest.

When your reign as Miss Liberia Maryland ends, how would you like to be remembered?
When my reign as Miss Liberia Maryland ends, I would like to be remembered as a good role model.

When you turn on TV these days, you can't help to coming across news story or an interview talking about Donald Trump's Miss USA's Miss Tara Conner's involvement with alcohol drinking, drug use, promiscuity. She stood to lose her crown to the 1st runner up from California.

Despite the blatant breach of contract between Tara Conner and Miss USA Organization, Mr Trump decided to give Miss Conner as second chance at the title.

From since then other state pageant title holders have stepped down due to various breaches of their contracts.

Contestant's Corner : Discovering your Pageant Talent

When I approach young women about participating in a pageant, they are usually very excited. However, some may look at me and say I would love to but I don’t have any talent. That really does sadden me because I strongly do believe that everyone possesses talent. The problem comes from ladies not knowing what their talent is or not ever having the opportunity to develop the talent they have.

How Does One Find Their Pageant Talent?
To do that one must ask themselves two basic questions?
(1) What is it that I enjoy doing; and (2) What drives me to desire more of it?

Maybe you enjoy singing: Perhaps you find yourself constantly singing alone or along with the radio. However you have never had the opportunity to join a choir, take classes, or better yet sing a solo in front of other people.

Maybe you enjoy theatre: Perhaps you were involved in a school play and you enjoyed acting in front of an audience however you never pursued your talent by taking some high school or college drama classes.

Maybe you love to dance: You go to parties and dance the night away however you have never taken a single formal dance class.

Maybe you enjoy poetry: You may have written some poetry but you may have never had the opportunity to recite one of your poems in front of an audience.

These are just of few the many talents that may lie dormant inside you waiting for you to discover them. Take some time out to discover your passion.

Once you have discovered your new found talent, the next thing you would need to do is to develop and nurture it. Developing your talent is not a process that has a definite ending. It is something that constantly changes and improves over time. Even the most talented person needs to develop their talent on an ongoing basis.

How Does One Develop Their Talent?

Practice: The best way to develop your talent is obviously thru practice. The more you practice the better you become.

Take classes: Many schools, community centers and colleges offer various classes for various types of talent. This might be a great way to practice for an upcoming competition as well as getting extra credit for school.

Hire a talent coach: Talent Coaches give you one on one mentoring and help immensely in developing your talent. Hiring a talent coach can prove to be a little pricey. However, the benefit from one on one training is quite beneficial.

Things To Remember When Developing Your Talent:

Uniqueness: Whatever your talent is let it be reflective of you. Do not worry about what others may have done and try to mimic past performances. Be Original.

Practice: The more you practice the less stressful you are during competition and the smoother your performance will go.

Choose an area in your talent that you can perfect: Sometimes I feel that contestants choose certain songs, dances, or skits solely on the basis that it may be popular choice or "in thing" at that time. They do not take in consideration the complexity, details, or the physical limitations that might prevent them from executing their talent to almost near perfection. For example, if your voice range cannot accommodate a song by Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey or Celine Dion, I would strongly suggest not singing it. Choose a selection that your voice range can accommodate. Or better yet adjust your voice so you can harmonize with the song without risking the possibility of singing off key. Remember singing should seem effortless. Appropriately adjusting your vocal range can also help to add your own unique flair to the song.

Have others critique your talent: Ask for critique of you talent from others before your competition. This may be the hardest yet the most important thing you do. Find people who will provide you with an unbiased opinion. Getting criticism from others allows you to fine tune your talent so that your best is put forward on the day of competition.

Your attire: Appearance is everything even in your talent competition. Make sure that your attire complements your talent and you complement the attire. Creativity is functionality is key when selecting pageant attire. If you are dancing to ballet or jazz piece, consider choosing an outfit that accentuates the fluid like moves in your dance. If you are reciting poetry perhaps wear an outfit that reflects what the poem is about.

Go for what you know: If you are good actor and not a good vocalist you might want to stay away from a musical play piece. Consider doing a strong dramatic role that will highlight your acting capabilities. Concentrate on what you’re good at and perfect it.

In conclusion, everyone has some form of talent. Here is to hoping you find your pageant talent. By nurturing and developing your new found talent your onstage performance is sure to be a knockout.

For the first time in Liberian US Pagaent history, the candidates for Miss Liberia Maryland and Miss Liberia Virginia will be combined into one star-studded evening of competition; beauty, glamour and intellect; announced producers Cianna Cooper and Yaetoe McIntosh.

According to the producers the strategic decision will allow them to collaborate in an unprecedented way. With both states working together, they can draw from a pool of talented candidates without taking away from the other's value. By working together, we can combine our resources to develop the best candidates in a team environment, which will yield a high energy and quality production; said Cianna Cooper, producer and owner of GEM Imaging Events & Studios.

Liberian Pageants talks to Miss Liberia Minnesota 2006-2007 Miss Decontee Kofa

I remember the Minnesota queen Decontee Koffa as one who had a true natural beauty about her, quite intellingent, and had an excellent command of delivering spoken word. During her talent she left the audience mesmerized as she delivered her poem that inspired Liberians to be the best that they can be.

Miss Koffa is a graduate of St. Cloud State University SCSU where she earn a BS degree in psychology. During her time at SCSU she became the founder and President of "Today Women", an award winner mentoring program that allows students of color at the University to serve as mentors to girls of color in their local school district. Ms Koffa is currently the Youth Services Conselor at the Central Minnesota Sexual Assult Center.

This Queen is definately using her crown to make a difference amongst the Liberian youth living in the Minnesota area. She is the first Queen to have established her own official non profit organizton dedicated to mentoring Liberian youth.

Miss Koffa is the Executive of the Liberian Youth Network. The Liberian Youth Network is a Minnesota based non profit Organization founded by seven young Liberian women. Their mission is to provide Liberian youth with the tools and resources need to empower themselves.

Contestant's Lounge: Your Pageant Application (The start of any pageant begins with your application)

Okay. So you have decided to participate in an upcoming pageant. Congratulations! However, when does the competition really begin? In my view it begins the moment you start filling out your application. This form as little as it may seem, has the potential to make or break your chances for capturing that crown. Let’s take a closer look.
The application is indeed your first chance to make an impression on the judges. Before any judge has a chance to see you in your swimsuit or evening gown; or even hear your interview, your little application is lying before them. Your application allows the judges find out the backgrounds of contestants. What is your application saying about you? Here is a list of things that contribute to a poor application.

1. Your application needs to be filled out by you and you alone.
I cannot tell you how dangerous this is. You would assume that every contestant fills out there own application however that is not always the case. By not filling out your own application, you run the risk of not being able to answer question that may arise from your application. That can lead to total disaster on the stage.

2. Proper grammar and spelling is very important.
Taking out time to check for grammar and spelling. Shows good command of grammar, organization, and that thought was put into the preparation of the document.

3. Be truthful about all information on you application.
What clubs and organizations do you belong to? If you were to be crown Miss Local/State/National how will you make a difference in your community? Be prepared to tell a judge at anytime what organizations you belong. If you abbreviated the name on the application be prepared to tell judges know the full names on any organizations that you may belong to. The application may ask you to briefly describe your platform. Take out time to chose a platform and then write in a brief description of it. However, before that pageant takes place that brief platform needs to be fully developed. To sum this all up, be prepared to elaborate on any and all parts of your application as needed.

4. Here are some suggestions for filling you pageant application.
When you receive you application, don’t be in such a rush to fill it out. Make a copy of your application. Take out time to assess each question that is posed to you. Write your first responses on the copied version. Make any changes that that need to be made on that copy. If sending application through email, review the questions and write out your answers on a separate sheet of paper.

Only when you are satisfied with your responses fill out your application. Have someone else help go over it for punctuation and spelling errors. Before submitting your application, make a copy. It may be months before the actual competition. Before the pageant, you will want to have a copy of what you sent them. Familiarize yourself will all the responses on your application and have your platform fully developed.

This may seem at lot to do for one application. However taking out the time to fill out your application properly will go a long way in saving you from unwanted stress. You never know, a properly filled out application may be the factor that gets you the crown!!!
